“What ZEISS is doing currently with their lens lineup is truly second to none.”
Sony Artisan of Imagery Otto Schulze shares his experience with the different ZEISS lenses:
What ZEISS is doing currently with their lens lineup is truly second to none. And I mean that in every possible way. From the range of lenses – Otus, Milvus, Batis, Loxia etc, all the way through the focal lengths offered. And quite simply, and lets be honest this is why we shoot ZEISS, the image quality produced by these lenses are truly the very best. And coming from being a long time Leica shooter I do not say this lightly. The first time I opened a image on my monitor at the studio taken with the Otus I was just blown away. I have not seen IQ like this ever in a 35mm image. There was a clarity, a quality about the image that truly just took my breath away. But with a lot of my wedding work, as incredible as the IQ is, the Otus size makes it a hard sell for me. And so I started playing with the Batis 85 and my goodness!
Look, I’m no camera review guy, I’m a working pro. And over the years I have quite literally shot almost all of the great lenses, on all of the systems. And I can without reservation say that these lenses are special. Cannot wait to get hands on the Milvus lineup already…ha.
Yes, the Otus just in terms of sheer IQ wins but I was surprised by how close the Otus and the Batis were in pure IQ. Add to that equation the size difference and addition of fast and quiet AF and I have an absolute winner for my destination wedding work. And the 25mm Batis met all my needs on the other end of the spectrum as well. Just superb! If there is one email that I get from other photographers more than any other it is “what lens was this?” And this is quite simply because there is quality about the images being produced by the ZEISS lenses that shines. It stands apart!
