Milvus 1.4/50 Review by Dustin Abbott
by Dustin Abbott
Is there room for another ZEISS 50mm lens in a 50mm market that has become crowded with a flood of new releases in recent years? There certainly is if that lens is the new Milvus 1.4/50! The Milvus 1.4/50 quickly won me over with a rare combination of exceptional build (now complete with weather sealing), beautiful handling, and image quality that has that undefinable quality of rendering that is hard to articulate in words. Put simply, everything just looks a little more “special” when shot with the Milvus 1.4/50.
Yes, the ZEISS challenges remain. The Milvus 1.4/50 is a manual focus only lens in a world geared for autofocus. It is heavier than any 50mm option save the Otus 1.4/55. When compared to the Otus the price is relatively inexpensive, but it is quite a bit more expensive than most other 50mm f/1.4 lenses. But when you hold the lens in your hands it feels worth every penny, and when you see the images that you can produce you may just start to consider it a bargain. I’ve reviewed more than a dozen 50mm lenses in the past two years, but I’ve not seen any of them that deliver better image quality than the Milvus 1.4/50. Other lenses may compete on MTF curves and test charts, but the real world rendering is what matter most to me…and should to you, too. Read on to discover why I think the Milvus 1.4/50mm is well worthy of your consideration if you are looking for a 50mm prime lens…
