I received my first camera when I was 7 years old, so I’ve always been a photographer. It began with shooting family vacations, then joining the high school yearbook staff. After graduation I attended Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, California, but dropped out half-way through. It’s a great program and I stayed long enough for the extensive technical information which I still use, but from a practical side, assisting photographers was what taught me the most (Gilles Bensimon, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel). Then once I started working on my own, I found the experiences and pressures with real clients to be more intense than any school project.
I began professionally in New York City in the 80’s, shooting portraits and fashion for Elle, Rolling Stone, Cosmopolitan, and Spin. Fifteen years ago I moved to Los Angeles and started documenting music exclusively – doing principle photography for System Of A Down, Linkin Park, and Toby Keith. The past four years I’ve been Pitbull’s photo/videographer (P/V) covering every aspect of his life including recording music and traveling to over 20 countries. My specialty is live concerts with exclusive access. Standing on stage in front of 20,000 people makes photographs incredibly special with a point of view from the artist’s perspective. My camera now is a Sony a7R and I exclusively use Carl Zeiss lenses – their fast primes are perfect for low available light.
I continually work at evolving and honing my craft. Sometimes I take pictures of things I’ve never seen before, just to enjoy a unique point of view or to find something else I might love to photograph. I’m passionate about what I do and certainly hope it shows in my images. I’m addicted to capturing the raw energy I see on stage and want to share that with the fans!
